We're here all year and find just as much (or more) to do
in the other three seasons as in the summer:
CONSIDER SOME OF THESE THINGS:
SPRING and FALL:
Migratory birds provide some spectacular bird watching.
All the waterfowl (swans, ducks, geese, pelicans and shorebirds) sometimes
number in the thousands right here on our beach or in the bay.
Bald eagles transit in substantial
numbers along this shore. They are here all summer, but increased
numbers during the spring and fall mean they can be seen fishing in the lake
and soaring overhead almost daily until freeze-up in November or even
December.
Songbird migration: The Lesser
Slave Lake Bird Observatory is just three km. up from the shore from us.
Check out "LSLBO" on the internet. This bird banding station has
proven to be a significant research point. They are very welcoming of
public involvement and host daily demonstrations all season and the Songbird
Festival in early June.
The lake is big enough for the ice
to do some amazing things during both freeze-up and break-up. Of course,
it all depends on the wind and weather, but the ice heaving and crashing can
sometimes shake the ground like a small earthquake, and rattle the windows
and dishes in the house. If you're lucky enough to witness a major
pile-up, you'll never forget it.
This is an excellent base for
hunting and fishing trips. Many lakes and good hunting territory is within reach of our
farm.
The Northern Lights get better and
better later on in the fall and early winter. Away from city haze and
lights, the night sky can be breathtaking.
The fall foliage colors are spectacular at their peak.
Generally, Indian Summer can be one of the nicest times of the year.
Starting in late April through May, our buffalo (bison) herd has its calves,
and children especially love seeing these little orange, fuzzy and amazingly
agile fellows put on their "show".
Do a spring or Easter get-together. Great place for an Easter egg
hunt.
WINTER
All the winter sports and
activities are a whole new experience when you have 108 km. of frozen lake to
play on. If conditions are good, the lake is a perfect winter
playground. If not, then ski or snowshoe in the cover of the wooded
paths and trails away from the lake in the hills behind us. The
Grizzly Ridge Nordic Ski Area south of town offers some excellent terrain
for all skill levels.
Snowmobilers will find lots of area
to explore.
Dog mushers....think of the
possibilities.
Ice fishing on Lesser Slave Lake or
others in the area.
Winter campfire picnics are a
wonderful way to get out and enjoy a warm sunny afternoon. Either use
the fire pit areas right around your suites, or find a secluded spot in the
vicinity.
A short (or long!!!) escape from
the city is a great way to cure the winter blues. We are close enough
to do the weekend or even a one-nighter without the hassle of a major drive.
Just get away from it all and
relax for a few days. Spending an evening by a crackling fire might be
just what you needed.
Use your imagination...winter can
be the most exhilarating time of the year...embrace it!!!
SUMMER
Summer fun
can be found in abundance. All manner of water sports; boating,
sailing, swimming, water skiing, fishing and any other you can think of can
be found here. Hiking, camping, exploring and sight seeing are also to
be greatly enjoyed. Use our location as a base to discover some of
Alberta's heritage in historic villages surrounding Lesser Slave Lake.
Or just relax, and enjoy the sun on our great beaches.
